Concept Thesis: Shakuntala is the love story between Dushyanta, King of an Earthly Realm, and Shakuntala, a woman of Celestial Piety. Their coming together represents the romantic union of nature and civilization. The play takes place over the seasons of their relationship, in which they come together in the Spring, fall in love in the Summer, are pulled apart by fate in Autumn, and reunite in the Winter . Their love is most powerful when they are together in the Himalayas, the mountains providing distance and perspective from their normal lives.
